Job Description
- Using established processes and procedures, the Tooling Project Engineer (TPE) is responsible for the design, fabrication and qualification of plastic injection molds and sheet metal dies by outside vendors.
- The TPE should be familiar with all aspects of a tooling shop and have a thorough understanding of the operation of all the machine tools and other tools used in the process of fabricating molds and dies.
- Should also have a thorough understanding of the tool making process from start to finish and have experience managing this process.
- Owner of all project related tooling activities
- Publish weekly tool tracking reports
- Monitor information/data passed from Client/Customer to the vendor
- Participate in design failure modes effects analysis (DFMA)
- Facilitation of early supplier involvement (ESI)
- Development of quotation criteria and quotation analysis
- Establishment of tool design and build timelines
- Collaboration with vendor to develop plans for timely execution
- Act as technical point of contact - Customer’s, Client’s and Vendor’s - for related issue
- Review of preliminary tool designs to insure compliance with Customer and/or Cliennt tooling standards, part drawing requirements, and manufacturing volume requirements
- Review final tool designs
- Creation of tool maintenance plan and development of spare parts proposal
- Drive progress against established timeline
- Oversee the implementation of product related engineering change orders
- Drive vendor readiness around raw material supply, secondary operations, and production jigs and fixtures
- Manage tool samples from vendor
- Evaluate first article inspection reports
- Execute tool and part approval via Client's Production Part Approval Process (JPPAP)
- Oversee production qualification tool runs
- Work independently to develop quotations and schedules for development programs of tools.
- Work concurrently with Client CAD Services, Business Unit Management, Manufacturing, Test, Purchasing, and Quality departments throughout the design phase of a program. Strive to provide a design that not only meets the customer’s criteria, Client’s manufacturing requirements, but is also of high quality, and cost effective.
- Be familiar with all aspects of molded plastic and sheet metal parts and be knowledgeable in troubleshooting mold issues and die issues.
- Estimate part cost for sheet metal and injection molded parts.
- Assess the suitability of a particular mold or die shop to the needs of a particular job.
- Stay abreast of the latest technology and techniques to provide input and approval of designs that are competitive and cost effective.
- Exercise good judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
- Adhere to all safety and health rules and regulations associated with this position and as directed by supervisor.
- Comply and follow all procedures within the company employee policy.
- Accredited Four year Tool and Die apprenticeship program; and a minimum of five years experience on the bench and have achieved the status of Class A journeyman.
- Demonstrated experience in managing people and budgets. Possess project management skills including scheduling and resource allocation forecasting.
- Advanced PC skills, including training and knowledge of Clien’s software packages. Ability to read, analyzes, and interprets general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
- Skills to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals Capable of effectively presenting information and responding to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and fundamentals of plane, and solid geometry and trigonometry
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
- Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
